SmartRings

A high-tech ring that promises to replicate many of the features found in the latest crop of smartwatches, but without strapping a brick to your wrist, is now one step closer to reality.

Here’s how to set yourself up for success in 2014

As the old saying goes: your goals don’t work unless you do. You will likely face bumps in the road and moments when you feel as though you’re not making progress. When this happens, remind yourself of all that you have done, refocus, and keep going.

Science

“This is completely new and very much simpler than anything that has been done before,” said Andrew Hodges , a mathematical physicist at Oxford University who has been following the work.

Flat. Like a streak across space. Thin. Stretched out. How come whenever we see galaxies, they always look like this

NASA has the answer. And it has something to do with how a ball of dough becomes pizza.

The Masks We Wear

The smiles and laughter we display are clever devices hiding our pains and sorrows we carry within us. While tears and heart break are displayed for all to see revealing the thin cracks of the mask that we wear, allowing a small portion of how we truly ache inside be seen from observers quietly watching for you to reveal yourself. - Se more..

Gionee Elife E7 Mini launched With Oppo like Swivel Camera

Chinese phone maker Gionee has just released the Elife E7 mini version of its mega-spec'd 5.5-inch, 1080p Elife E7 phone , but it resembles its larger sibling in name only.

First off, the 13-megapizel camera and flash are on a swivel at the top, Oppo N1-style.

The specifications are otherwise a step down, starting with the 4.7-inch, 720p screen and continuing with the 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592 CPU (instead of a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800) and 1GB of RAM in lieu of 3GB.

It also sports 16GB of storage, dual-SIM 3G capability and Android 4.2. Still, the folks at FoneArena, who got their hands on one during its launch in India, said it feels just as premium as the Elife E7 and it looks to have skipped the fingerprint-prone glossy finish of that model. Though it likely won't arrive in the US, selfie self-portrait lovers in India will be able to grab it for 18,999 (about $310).

HowTo Be Smart

While the media produces stories on beautiful and famous people with problems, sometimes it almost seems to be unpopular to be smart. Such an attitude will not fare you well in the real world. Cultivating your intelligence is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your happiness and financial success in life.

Steps

Set Goals

Set goals once a week. Ask yourself during each goal-setting session, how many of last week's goals did I achieve? Why didn't I accomplish some of my goals and what can I do to give myself a greater chance of success?

Be organized.

You don't need to be a total neat freak, but wasting time is not smart. Of course, there are many geniuses who are completely disorganized (think of the absent-minded professor) but if you're making an active effort to be smart, taking a conscious approach to how you spend your time is a big step in the right direction.

Aim to educate yourself.

Keep in mind an education isn't the junk you are forced to do in school for diplomas and degrees; it's an understanding of the world around you. People who are naturally curious for some reason begin to stop asking questions the moment they hit school. The truly brilliant mind however, always questions their world and tries to make sense of it. That is the secret to "genius". Try teaching yourself. You can even learn from your life experiences, sometimes called "unschooling".

Expand Your Horizons

1. Be open-minded and willing to learn new things. Just because you're great at one thing doesn't mean you have to stick to it! Find ways to step out of your comfort zone. This is where the learning happens.

2. Cultivate an interest in subjects like current events, interesting facts, funny and inspiring quotations, good books and movies, scientific studies and interesting inventions. Educational television is a great way to learn. Check out PBS or History channel.

People who have something to talk about other than their own internal problems and worries appear far more interesting and intelligent.

If you can read much faster than you can speak, it is much more efficient to read a book, or better yet a non-linear electronic document like a wiki than to watch a show for all but the most intellectually demanding or video-dependent learning. Commercial television is particularly bad because its ultimate purpose is to do just enough to keep you at the TV and its ads, not satisfy you so you can do something else.

Work on your vocabulary.

Use a few definitions from the dictionary each day, or subscribe to a "word-of-the-day" service on-line. You can also take the vocabulary tests in Readers Digest or buy a book on increasing your working vocabulary. Read the dictionary one letter at a time. This will take you at least a year but you will grow intellectually.

Read a variety of books.

Keep your reading diverse by reading books of all genres including non-fiction.

Exercise your mind.

1. Learn how to solve the Rubik's cube. It is easier than it appears if you learn tricks in visualizing the cube's geometry. Also do word and math puzzles.

2. Learn how to do mental sums or speed math. There are all sorts of tricks for doing complicated math in your head that will amaze others. Plus, it can potentially increase working memory.

Learn a new language.

Apart from being a linguistic exercise, it may bring you into contact with new people and ideas. You may feel less of a stranger when you visit a place and you know some of the language. Also, at some point you will realise that there are some phrases or concepts in other languages that have no direct translation in English! This can be a challenging and fun exercise for the mind. (Note, try to be patient and positive when studying a language as it may take time to reach the level you desire.)

Visit new places as much as you can.

If possible, try to visit other countries too. Visiting cities in your country or in a different one gives you a open mind and teaches you about the world we live in. You will be able to understand other cultures (how people live in a different place, how they behave with each other, how they live and so on).

You will also be able to understand that the planet earth is huge and there are so much to see and do. You will be fascinated on how there are so many different people and cultures in the world. That will make you smart and interesting.

Make connections.

Burying information somewhere deep in your brain is not useful; you have to be able to access it in real-world situations. Think of real-world situations in which a piece of information will make sense. Then share it and watch it grow!

Developing People Skills

1. Simplify. Talking about things that no one else can understand does not make you smart. Genius is the ability to translate the complex into the simple. Practice explaining concepts to others. See just how simple and clear you can make your explanations. If someone doesn't understand you, it is not their fault for being ignorant, it is your fault for being inarticulate.

2. Learn to listen carefully to others' opinions about controversial things, or things they know about and you do not. You do not have to agree with them but remember everybody has something to teach you. Asking questions may allow you to re-evaluate your own beliefs, or point out the flaws in theirs. Keep an open mind. The more intelligent you are the more questions you will ask of the people around you.

3. Be nice to people. Practicing kindness in the face of challenges is a sign of maturity, class and intelligence.

Tips

If someone asks you a question that you don't know the answer to, ask them to explain or to ask it in another way. Maybe they have not framed their question well, or they are being indirect; maybe they are not asking a question at all, but expressing another idea?

For example, "do these pants make me look fat" is not a 'real' question but a way to ask for reassurance. If you have determined that they really want an honest answer from you, and you don't know the answer, ask them why they want to know, or the context of their question.

Once you understand what they want to know, but you don't know the answer, be honest and say you do not know. There is more than one type of smart. There's book smart, street smart, people smart, emotional smart, technology smart, and many other types of intelligence.

Know the difference between being smart and being knowledgeable. Being smart is not the same as knowing a lot about the subject. Being smart means you understand problems and can think of ways to solve them. Being knowledgeable means you know a lot about one or more topics. Are you both smart and knowledgeable or just one? Meditation exercises the mind so you can concentrate properly.

Warnings

Don't let intelligence completely consume your life, remember that you have to enjoy life to the point of enjoying it as much as learning.

Know your limits, take a break every now and then to reassess yourself and manner of completely achieving your primary goal.

Don't become a know-it-all, do-it-all, or argumentative. It is obnoxious! It is better to be subtle, not obvious.

Don't just go online, research one fact, and wow people with it. Pick one topic to learn about instead.

Do not try to judge a group or community or anything with basic knowledge.

HowTo Use Google+ So it Aids Your SEO Efforts

Google+ is still relatively new, the interface is unlike any other social network, and users, even though they number in millions, have not yet saturated the platform or the possibilities it offers. This is the perfect time to hop on to the Plus wagon and announce your presence in the cyber world. If you are like most people, you know that Google can't be ignored when it comes to search engine optimization. And Google+ involvement is just what you need to boost your SEO efforts. Read on for a few tips and tricks to use Google+ for SEO.
1. Unfair Advantage
Most people seem to agree that material posted on Google+ get indexed by Google faster than anything posted anywhere else. In any case, even if we don't go into comparisons, it would be foolhardy to not take the opportunity to plant a few of your links right inside Google's doorstep when you have the chance.
About posting links from your blog, for example, don't just copy-paste links. That looks dumb. Write a few words, summarize the content, mention why you wrote the post and think of a reason to invite people to view the content on your blog. As you entice people to visit, so your ranking goes higher (we are assuming you have great content which captivates people and lowers your bounce rate remarkably).
We should probably clarify the 'unfair' part - it is not that Google is unfair, but other social platforms like Twitter and Facebook have specific policies and privacy settings that do not let everything get indexed as well as or as fast as the content on Google+.
2. Surprise! Surprise!
Did you know that the first sentence of any Google+ post is encased in title tags? That simply means your post will behave like an article with a title when it is indexed and displayed on SERP. And we all know the value of an engaging headline, right? Make sure you include your keyword, where appropriate, in the first sentence, and write it like the headline that it really is.
3. Being in the Flow
It is recommended that you tweet five times a day (throughout the day), at least, if you are going to grab attention on Twitter. We have not come across any such specification with regard to posting on Google+ but it is easy to understand that unless you post regularly, you will not figure prominently or at all in other people's feeds. Obviously, we would not ask you to post anything that comes to mind. Before you embark on a Google+ SEO boosting campaign, have a definite strategy and a reserve of materials to post.
This is something like having a lot of articles ready to publish on a blog - you set them to be published at regular intervals without having to bother about writing a fresh one every time it is time for you to post. This kind of approach is convenient because it does not stop you from writing something spontaneously - on a current hot topic, for instance, but always keeps you prepared with ready material for posting. Having a definite strategy is important, or you will either lose consistency or run out of interesting things to say by trying to figure things out in a hurry.
4. Putting Your Best Face Forward
Google uses Google+ to enhance search engine results and ranking by showing Google Authorship along with rich snippets. Sign up for Google Authorship and let people see you - it can be your own photo or that of your brand, but this is a great way to use a social platform to create an impression and increase brand visibility. Yes, you can do this without fiddling around Google+, but refer to what we mentioned in the first point with regard to crawling and indexing.
5. Connect Further
Join communities on Google+ to further increase your connections. This way, you will get to know more people and more people will get to know you. This is true for any kind of social network, as also for bloggers in general. Be active, be helpful, be everything that you'd expect others to be in a social situation, and you will have people taking interest in you soon enough. It is a matter of time before your SEO efforts merge into SMM and reap benefits for you both in terms of traffic and, as a consequence, in SERP rankings as well.
Additionally, it is useful to make quite a few public posts so that people who don't know you can come across your content and share them, to have a Google+ button on your site (this particular share is supposed to have more SEO value than Facebook 'likes'), and to use hash tags sparingly but with care so that your content is found for your keywords. The most important thing to remember is to be social because first and foremost, Google+ is a social network, and you can make optimal use of it only when others accept you as someone interesting and fun to be with.

This Gene Helps Some of Us Never Forget a Face

The oxytocin receptor, a gene known to influence mother-infant bonding, also plays a role in the ability to remember faces.

The finding has important implications for disorders in which social information processing is disrupted—like autism spectrum disorder—and may lead to new strategies for improving social cognition in several psychiatric disorders.

According to study author Larry Young, of the department of psychiatry at Emory University, this is the first study to demonstrate that variation in the oxytocin receptor gene influences face recognition skills.

He and colleagues point out the implication that oxytocin plays an important role in promoting our ability to recognize one another, yet about one-third of the population possesses only the genetic variant that negatively impacts that ability.

The new finding may help explain why a few people remember almost everyone they have met while others have difficulty recognizing members of their own family.

For the study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers studied 198 families with a single autistic child because these families are known to show a wide range of variability in facial recognition skills. Two-thirds of the families were from the United Kingdom, and the remainder from Finland.

Researchers had previously found the oxytocin receptor is essential for olfactory-based social recognition in rodents, like mice and voles, and wondered whether the same gene could also be involved in human face recognition.

Familial face recognition They examined the influence of subtle differences in oxytocin receptor gene structure on face memory competence in the parents, non-autistic siblings, and autistic child, and discovered a single change in the DNA of the oxytocin receptor had a big impact on face memory skills in the families.

This finding implies that oxytocin likely plays an important role more generally in social information processing, which is disrupted in disorders such as autism.

Additionally, this study is remarkable for its evolutionary aspect. Rodents use odors for social recognition while humans use visual facial cues.

This suggests an ancient conservation in genetic and neural architectures involved in social information processing that transcends the sensory modalities used from mouse to man.

Skuse credits Young’s previous research that found mice with a mutated oxytocin receptor failed to recognize mice they previously encountered.

“This led us to pursue more information about facial recognition and the implications for disorders in which social information processing is disrupted.”

Researchers from University College London and University of Tampere in Finland contributed to the study, which was funded by grants from the US National Institute of Mental Health and the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs as well as the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation and National Alliance for Autism Research.

The Science Behind Fonts And How They Make You Feel

Mikael Cho is the co-founder of ooomf , a network that connects short-term software projects with handpicked developers and designers. Mikael writes about psychology, startups, and product marketing over on the ooomf blog.

I’ve noticed how seemingly small things like font and the spacing between letters can impact how I feel when reading online. The right font choice along with the absence of sidebars and popups makes everything feel easier and better to read. Websites like Medium , Signal vs. Noise, and Zen Habits are like yoga studios for content. Their presentation of content puts me at peace while reading, allowing me to fully focus on the stories without distraction.

The Cracked layout is painful to look at. Your eyes squint and dart, constantly second-guessing what you’re reading now with what you should be reading next. After experimenting with how we display content on the ooomf blog , I discovered there’s an element of science behind why we feel this way toward certain typefaces and layouts.

How we read:

When we read, our eyes follow a natural pattern called a Scan Path.

We break sentences up into scans (saccades) and pauses (fixations). Here’s the Scan Path for a typical reader : Your eyes typically move across a page for between 7 to 9 letters before needing to pause to process what you’re reading. As you scan a sentence, no useful visual processing is happening in your brain. Visual processing is completely dependent upon the information taken in when you pause.

So why does this matter? Understanding the way we read is important for designing how words look because you can directly impact someone’s connection to your writing with the right font and layout.

Why the right font layout makes you feel good:

When I set out to write this post, I wasn’t sure I’d find scientific backing for why we feel a certain way toward certain fonts. I thought choosing font was mostly art, with a sprinkle of science.

That was until I came across a study by psychologist Kevin Larson. Larson has spent his career researching typefaces and recently conducted a landmark study at MIT about how font and layout affect our emotions.

In the study, 20 volunteers – half men and half women – were separated into two groups. Each group was shown a separate version of The New Yorker – one where the image placement, font, and layout were designed well and one where the layout was designed poorly:

The researchers found that readers felt bad while reading the poorly designed layout. Sometimes, this feeling would be expressed physically with a frown.

The corrugator supercilii facial muscles that help produce a frown have been linked to the amygdala , an area of your brain responsible for emotion.

Meanwhile, the participants who read content from the good reading layout, felt like it took less time to read and felt better.

People exposed to the well-designed layout were found to have higher cognitive focus, more efficient mental processes, and a stronger sense of clarity.

The researchers concluded that well- designed reading environments don’t necessarily help you understand what you’re reading better, but they do make you feel good, causing you to feel inspired and more likely to take action.

Culture impacts your preference for fonts

One explanation for why some fonts make you feel a certain way is because of deep links in culture.

For instance, Courier fonts were designed to resemble old memos written on type writers: Many people relate Helvetica with the US Government because it’s used in tax forms.

These associations are difficult to remove and should be considered when deciding on a font choice. Here’s how Bank of America’s website would look with the Impact font associated with News headlines:

Original Bank of America website: Bank of America website with Impact font (associated with newspaper headlines): When the fonts are changed to Impact, Bank of America doesn’t exactly seem trustworthy.

Because fonts are designed by humans, there is usually some meaning attached to them. You don’t want to choose a font that is easily associated with something in our culture that’s markedly different than the vibe you’re trying to give off.

How to design better content

The quality of your content is the most important thing but how you present that content by choosing the right font and layout still has it’s place.

As French poet Paul Claudel put it, “The secret of type is that it speaks.”

So how can you design your words to help elicit positive feelings in people? Here’s a few techniques from typography experts that you might find useful:

1. Choose an anchor font

Type designer Jessica Hische recommends first selecting a typeface for the content that is most prevalent in your project (most likely your body copy).

This will be the typeface that you base your other font decisions on like headlines and subheads.

There’s four main categories of fonts to choose from:

Serif Fonts – Letters with short lines coming off the edges. Viewed as more formal and traditional. Best suited for print.

Sans-serif Fonts – Letters without serifs. Viewed as informal and playful. Best suited for digital.

Script Fonts – Resembles handwriting and often used in formal invitations. Not ideal for body copy.

Decorative Fonts – Informal fonts viewed as original. Best suited for headlines but not body copy.

For reading on the Web, it’s best to stay away from script or decorative typefaces. Most Script and Decorative fonts have low legibility which slows down your reading because you are busy trying to figure out what letters are.

You don’t want your readers asking, “was that an ‘a’ or an ‘e’” every word.

If you’re scrunching your eyes trying to figure out a word that’s a signal that your brain is dedicating unnecessary energy to identifying words.

Decorative typefaces should be used for content that is meant to be seen at a glance, like in a logo, rather than read as multiple paragraphs in body text.

When choosing a font for body text, it’s usually best to stick with a Serif font or Sans-serif font.

Some typography

experts recommend sans-serif fonts for reading online because the quality of screen resolutions is less than in print. But, as screen resolutions dramatically improve, Serif fonts are becoming easier to read on the Web. Content-heavy websites like Medium use a Serif font (probably to give off the vibe of a print editorial).

The most important thing with choosing a font is to make sure the letters are easily decipherable from one another so your readers don’t have to spend precious mental energy identifying letters.

2. Pick a font size bigger than 12pt

In 1929, a study was conducted called the “Hygiene of reading.” One thing researchers were trying to determine was which font size would be best for reading. The study looked at 6pt, 8pt, 10pt, 12pt, and 14pt type sizes.

The researchers concluded that a font size of 10pt font is the most efficient for reading but a lot has changed in how we consume content today compared to the 1920s.

However, as more reading shifts to digital and screen resolutions improve, the way we read content is changing. Many designers mention that 16pt font is the new 12pt font. A recent study has also shown that larger font sizes can elicit a stronger emotional connection.

Medium has one of my favorite reading environments online and they use a 22pt font size. Several of my other favorite websites have adopted a font size over 20pt for their content:

Medium – 22pt
37Signals: Signal vs. Noise – 22pt
Zen Habits – 21pt

While having a huge font over 30pt most likely wouldn’t make sense, many blogs have font in the 10pt-12pt range. Try increasing your font size. If you’re using 12pt font, try increasing to 16pt font. If you’re using 18pt font increase to 22pt.

You can feel the difference.

3. Watch your line length

The line length is how far your sentences stretch across the page. The ideal line length should be between about 50 to 75 characters.

If the line length is too short, your reader’s rhythm will break because their eyes must travel back to the left of the page too often.

A line length that is too long makes it hard to find where lines of text start and end. It can make it difficult for your reader to get to the next line without accidentally jumping to the wrong place.

Research shows that your subconscious mind gets a boost of energy when jumping to a new line (as long as it doesn’t happen too often) but this energy dwindles as you read over the duration of the line.

Here’s the line lengths from the sites mentioned above:

Medium – 75 characters
37Signals: Signal vs. Noise – 76 characters
Zen Habits – 78 characters

4. Mind your spacing

Adequate spacing between letters is important for your readers to be able to move through sentences fluidly. The tighter your letters are together, the harder it is for people to identify the shapes that make up different letterforms.

Take a look at another example from Jessica Hische of the readability of Helvetica versus Avenir. Hische recommends Avenir because of its more open spacing:

Proper spacing makes your readers feel good. Here’s 5 recommended font combinations from Google Web Fonts that have good spacing for reading long blocks of content.

I decided to put these tips into practice with our ooomf email newsletter campaign. Here’s a comparison between our original campaign and our new design:

By changing the font and increasing it’s size, our email content felt much better.

Packaging content the right way is important and knowing why we feel the way we do about the look of content will hopefully help next time you design content for a project. As Aarron Walter, author of Designing for Emotion , writes,

“People will forgive shortcomings, follow your lead, and sing your praises if you reward them with positive emotion.”

It’s important to remember that while there is a science connected to how your words are designed, no amount of good design can save bad content. Write well first. Design well second.
